Autograph Sources
Last updated April 28, 2005Where my autographs are from...
The best and funnest and most dependable way to get autographs is in person. Of course. ~grin~ Sometimes, this can be a little expensive as most celebrities are charging for autographs now; usually this is anywhere from $10-$60 per autograph, depending on who it is and what they're signing. At some conventions, autographs are part of the ticket price. At others they're not and you have to buy an autograph ticket. For me, getting autographs from lesser known stars is more fun because they have time to talk, unlike the big name stars, and since I don't collect autographs for their monetary value. And they're more likely to personalize the photo (which I always want).

Another way to get autographs is to write the celebrity. If they're on a tv show, then usually the best thing to do is write them through the show. If they're not, then you probably should go through their agent or their fan club (if they have one). *Never* write a celebrity at home -- it's just downright rude. They deserve privacy just as much as everyone else does. Also, if they're not charging for the autograph, be nice -- send along a 9*12 stamped envelope with cardboard backing. That way, you're more likely to get a photo back. Sometimes if you send along a photo you want auto'd, they'll autograph it, but not always; they may send it back unsigned along with one they did sign (or it could be a preprinted autograph). If they charge, they are usually including the cost of the packaging along with the autograph and photo, so a SASE probably isn't necessary, unless specifically requested. Keep the letter short; write it in legible long-hand (more personal). I use regular paper with my name and address printed on it so it's readable.

Some photos you can just buy signed photos at a set price from dealers such as Creation, who I think generally have a big booth up at their cons with more photos available. If you're looking for signed Babylon 5 photos, try Pipeline Productions or the merchandise page at The Galactic Gateway. Also try Jungle Intrigue (lots of scifi folks) and Metro Entertainment Autographs (Buffy, Angel, Star Trek, Babylon 5, etc.). For a list of several other autograph dealers, try Kirk's Celebrity Autographs Webpage.

I get a number of my auto'd photos from ebay from dealers whom I *believe* are respectable and don't fake the autographs. I do this mostly for people I figure I'm never gonna meet or just can't afford to get in person or it's a photo I really like. Joe Motes (user name: joe_motes) is one -- he's the one who does the Vulkons. Another is starbase-atlanta -- they're another convention group. Creation (the big convention group) does sell auto'd photos on ebay and tends to have reserve prices (which I hate), but some of them are *very* expensive IMO; it just depends how much you're willing to pay. Jungle Intrigue and Metro Entertainment seem to be a good places as well. When I buy from ebay, I look to see how long they've been in business, if they're a member of UACC (the autograph collectors club, I believe), and I look at their feedback. I also see if they say where they got the autograph. You can also compare autographs with other sources if you know where to find them (which I don't).
