"Let your heart guide you. It whispers, so listen closely."
~ The Land Before Time ~
Bright rays of sunlight gleamed across the city as it rose above the distant hills, peeking slowly out at the inhabitants of the coastal city. The sky brightened, welcoming the great star into its embrace. Oranges and reds glistened off windows and water and streets and cars, chasing away the morning darkness.
Blair Sandburg watched in silence. Dressed in black jeans, a white t-shirt, and a long-sleeved gray plaid flannel shirt, he stood on the loft balcony, leaning forward to rest his arms on the railing. Face lifted slightly to absorb the warmth, he inhaled the scent of the morning, of the sun, of the bright new day that had arrived, full of promise and well-being. A breeze blew past him, but he ignored it, content to rest in the pleasure of the sunrise.

Movement behind him made him smile, but he didn't shift, only waited. A moment later, he felt the presence of another standing to his right. Slowly opening his eyes, he peered upward to see an echoing smile on the face of Jim Ellison, eyes sparkling with warmth and soft amusement.
Also dressed and ready to go for the day, though his attire consisted of a suit and tie in deference to a court appearance, Jim met his eyes and his smile turned into a grin and a gentle shake of his head. The breeze blew past them again, causing a slight shiver in Blair's form. In answer to the shared moment, Jim held out one of the coffee mugs he carried, steam curling from the top of hot liquid.
"You lift me, and I'll lift you, and we'll ascend together."

A thankful smile on his face, Blair accepted the mug, cupping both hands around it as he lifted it to his lips, sipping slowly. His eyes returned to the city, gazing outward as others joined them in preparing for the new day. Children tumbled outside onto the sidewalks, eager to begin their play in the bright sunlight. Adults hurried on their way, anxious to get to work.
He took another swallow of the still hot but cooling liquid. Next to him, Jim echoed his movement, bringing his own mug up, taking another swallow, shifting his weight a little, causing their arms to touch, to rest against each other. Blair glanced upward for a moment, observing the taller man's profile in an unguarded moment as he gazed out at his city, his protectorate. Their city, their protectorate.
"Silences make the real conversations between friends.
Not the saying but the never needing to say is what counts."
~ Margaret Lee Runbeck ~
The guide watched as the sentinel closed his eyes and took a deep breath, then opened his eyes again and turned his head to meet his eyes, a smile dancing around the edges of his lips. Returning the smile, Blair shrugged, not the least bit bothered at being caught at 'Jim-watching'. Fine laugh lines appeared around Jim's eyes as he shook his head in fond bemusement.
Jim slung his arm over Blair's shoulders and pulled him into a one-armed hug, careful not to jostle the contents of either coffee mug. Blair leaned into the embrace and lifted his hand to grip Jim's hand where it rested on his shoulder. In a bit, they would each leave to their separate duties and responsibilities to their city and to its people. But for right then...they were content to remain in silent observation. Long minutes of serenity and stillness passed as together they watched the sun finish its ascent into the sky.
Daybreak. All was well.
"Some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts.
And we are never, ever the same."
