Marjorie Monaghan Candidate For T'Pau Role?
By Christian -- April 15, 2001 - 4:32 PM
URL: http://www.trektoday.com/news/150401_02.shtml

After already reporting that an unnamed Babylon 5 actress was up for the role of Sub-Commander T'Pau in Series V, the Great Link today reported that the actress in question is Marjorie Monaghan . Besides appearing on Babylon 5 as Number One, she guest-starred in the Voyager episode 'Heroes & Demons' as Freya.

According to the site's source, Monaghan is in the final selection for the part. The source did not know for sure whether she actually had the role, though one person who the source had spoken to was certain she had the part.

In the casting sheet that was leaked to the internet last month (story), the character of T'Pau is described as an "austere yet sensual" Vulcan female in her late 20s or early 30s. "She's the Science Officer assigned to oversee humanity's progress on board Enterprise," the sheet described the character. "Although she's cautious and guarded around humans, whom she considers primitive and irrational, she's developed a grudging respect for Captain Archer. She'll become one of his most loyal and trusted crew members."

Monaghan has a long history with science fiction shows. One of her first television appearances was in the Quantum Leap episode 'One Strobe Over The Line,' in which she played Edie Landsdale. While filming this role, she of course met Scott Bakula, who has been reported to be in negotiations for the lead role in the next Star Trek series.

In addition, she has appeared in shows such as The Pretender, The Sentinel and Space Rangers, but she is probably best known for her recurring guest role as Number One on Babylon 5. Star Trek fans might know her as Freya, the Doctor's love interest in the Voyager episode 'Heroes and Demons.'

According to a biography published on the Unofficial Marjorie Monaghan Site, Monaghan currently resides in the Los Angeles area, where she was developing a new series and had begun to do some writing. She also enjoys to sing, and is a frequent guest at science fiction conventions.

Interestingly, the most recent convention Monaghan appeared at was FedCon 9 in Bonn, Germany. TrekNews.de posted a report about her convention appearance, but of course she did not talk about the fifth Star Trek series at all - even if these rumours are true, she is undoubtedly forbidden to say anything. Monaghan did talk about her love for the science fiction genre, saying that she thought science fiction themes are always very interesting and the genre offers good, strong roles for women. With her height of 6 feet, that is especially important for Monaghan, as most male actors look rather short compared to her.

In its original report, the Great Link stressed that Monaghan is only in the running to get the part, and it is not certain yet whether she will actually get it. In addition, none of this has been confirmed by Paramount, so as usual, please treat this news as you would any rumour. Thanks go out to the Unofficial Marjorie Monaghan Site, MediaTrek.com and TrekNews.de for the above photos, respectively.

There has been a plethora of rumors in recent days from various fan sites, but I've opted to post these from TGL {The Great Link -- http://www.greatlink.org/} mainly because as I've said previously, TGL established itself many years ago as a reliable source for inside Trek information and therefore these rumors have a little more weight than those elsewhere. Allow me to emphasize yet again that TGL has yet to established a track record with regard to Series V, but their past record and other mounting evidence from reliable sources about Series V seems to warrant the posting of the following:

"Our source is back. Once again, TGL thanks him/her, and once again, we can tell you what our source has told us regarding Series V. Please note that this information has not been confirmed by Paramount.

"Our source has "...managed to find out that it was Marjorie Monaghan who went for the part of T'Pau. She was the head of the Mars Resistance in Babylon 5 Season 4. I don't know if she has the part for sure, but she was in the final selection. However a source was certain that she had the part..."

"Marjorie Monaghan appeared in several episodes of B5 as 'Number One', leader of the Mars Resistance. Her final B5 appearance was in Season Five's 'Objects at Rest'. Since then, she's appeared in the 'Becker' comedy show, which also stars ex-DS9Niner Terry Farrell. Her full Internet Movie Database profile can be checked out here.

"Once again, TGL points out that this information has not been confirmed, and that Marjorie Monaghan is in the running to get the part - she hasn't been cast yet. She might not get cast - the role of T'Pau may be played by someone else."

Marjorie Monaghan Out For Series V Role
By Christian -- April 18, 2001 - 8:35 AM
URL: http://www.trektoday.com/news/180401_01.shtml

On Sunday, it was reported that former 'Babylon 5' actress Marjorie Monaghan was being considered for the role of Sub-Commander T'Pau in the next Star Trek series. Possibly at the same time this news was reported, the Star Trek producers decided to drop her from consideration.

"The producers decided over the weekend that [Marjorie] wouldn't get the role of the Vulcan," a Paramount source told the Great Link. "That just leaves two ladies left."

Who the two candidates for the role are is yet unknown, though it has become fairly clear what kind of profile they would need to fit in. As described in the Series V casting sheet , T'Pau will be an "austere yet sensual female" in her late 20s or early 30s. This was confirmed by Michael Logan at TV Guide, who reported that the producers were looking for a "younger, more Seven of Nine-ish actress" for the role (story). The 6 foot tall, blonde Monaghan would certainly have fit that profile.

Now that Monaghan is no longer up for the role in the next Star Trek series, she is free to pursue several of her other projects - according to the recently-moved Unofficial Marjorie Monaghan Site, she has recently begun writing, and has said she would love to work on some projects in Europe. At the recent FedCon convention in Germany, she also did not appear adverse to appearing in a possible 'Babylon 5: Legend of the Rangers' series, so this would also enable her to do that.

MarjorieAccording to The Great Link website, at the Chiller Theater convention this weekend (28-29 April), held in East Rutherford, NJ, former 'Babylon 5' actress Marjorie Monaghan confirmed that while she did audition for a part in the fifth Star Trek series, she won't know 'til next week whether or not she did get the part. The Great Link originally reported that Marjorie was in the running for the part of the Vulcan 'T'Pau' a few weeks ago, only to learn that she wouldn't get the part. That was followed by reports of a renewed casting call for the role of 'T'Pau'. With today's news, it seems that Paramount hasn't had much luck with the renewed casting call. The next 'Star Trek' series, rumored to be titled 'Enterprise', begins shooting next week, on May 8, 2001.

Monaghan Still in the Running for T'Pau Role
By Lisa -- May 1, 2001 - 2:48 PM
URL: http://www.trektoday.com/news/010501_06.shtml

Despite reports that Paramount had dropped her for consideration and had even sent out a new casting call, former Babylon 5 actress Marjorie Monaghan said this weekend she is still hoping to land the role of T'Pau in the next Star Trek series.

While appearing at the recent Chiller Theater Spring 2001 Expo, Monaghan confirmed that she had indeed auditioned for a part in Series V. According to a report that appeared at the Great Link, she won't know until this week whether she got the part.

Marjorie Monaghan was originally linked to the role of Sub-Commander T'Pau in mid April. Later reports suggested that the Monaghan would not after all get the role of the Vulcan, and that two other actresses were now in contention (story), though their identities were not revealed.

A few days later, Paramount sent out a renewed casting call for the character (story). This suggested that all negotiations for the role had ended, or possibly that Paramount was using the renewed casting call as a negotiating tactic. By searching for other actresses, the studio could have been attempting to bring down the demands of potential candidates for the role. Today's news would seem to confirm that this was indeed the case, or that the new new casting call had no effect.

Marjorie as FreyaMarjorie Monaghan is an actress with a long history of science fiction roles. She is best known to Star Trek fans for her part in the Voyager episode 'Heroes and Demons' as Freya. She appeared with Scott Bakula in Quantum Leap and has had roles in Space Rangers and The Sentinel, as well as her best known role to date as Number one on Babylon 5.

The renewed casting call for the role of T'Pau described the Vulcan as "a beautiful, sensual Science Officer assigned to oversee humanity's progress on board the Enterprise," naming her as the series' female lead. "She has great dignity, confidence and strength - she is never timid. Being a true Vulcan she considers humans primitive and irrational, but she develops a respect for Captain Archer and becomes one of his most loyal and trusted crew members."

The role of T'Pau is not the only Series V lead with casting problems. Reportedly, former Quantum Leap actor Bakula is still in negotiations with Paramount over the Jackson Archer lead role.  Last week, the actor signed on to film the pilot for CBS comedy Late Boomers, but left his options open for Series V (story). This was likely one of the reasons the expected official announcement about the next series was pushed back.

The new series is scheduled to begin filming on May 8th, exactly a week from now. The original report on this item can be found here at The Great Link.

Please remember that these reports have not been officially confirmed by Paramount. Until then, treat all Series V news from unofficial sources as you would any rumour.

Marjorie on Babylon 5Another day, another T'Pau update. Hartriono Sastrowardoyo was At the Chiller Theatre con this weekend (28-29 April), held in East Rutherford, NJ, Marjorie Monaghan confirmed that while she did audition for a part in the fifth Star Trek series, she won't know 'til next week whether or not she did get the part.

TGL originally reported that Majorie was in the running for the part few weeks ago, only to learn that she wouldn't get the role (or so she thought). That was followed by reports of a renewed casting call for the role of T'Pau.

With today's news, it seems that Paramount haven't had much luck with their renewed casting call, and there still may be a place for Marjorie on the bridge of the 5th Generation starship.

Thanks to Hartriono Sastrowardoyo for the info.
